Electrovaya, an innovative leader in zero-emissions and plug in hybrid electric vehicles based in Toronto, announced on Tuesday that it will debut an electric car sharing program in partnership with the Maryland Science Center located in Baltimore’s historic Inner Harbor district.
With a target launch date scheduled for August 1, the car sharing program will allow Baltimore residents and visitors the opportunity to rent the Electrovaya Maya 300, four-door hatchback only $7.50 per hour.
The Maya 300, which Electrovaya debuted at the Canadian International Auto Show this past February, is powered by a 12 kilowatt-hour lithium-ion polymer battery and has a range of up to 120 miles per charge. Charging times for the battery are 6-8 hours on a 110-volt line and 3-4 hours on a 220-volt line.
The car sharing program is being funded in part by a $500,000 contribution from ExxonMobile, who developed the battery separator film used in the Maya’s battery pack. According to Electrovaya, the separator film provides the Maya with increased power and improves the stability and safety of the lithium-ion battery.
According to Electrovaya’s CEO, Sankar Das Gupta, the Maya 300 weighs 2,000 pounds, comes equipped with a 15 kW permanent magnet motor capable of 20 horsepower and offers amenities found in conventional gas-powered vehicles. Top speed for the Maya 300 is limited to 35 mph to comply DOT requirements for classification as a Neighborhood Electric Vehicle (NEV).
Despite the fact that the Maya 300 is currently only available in fleet sales, Gupta asserts that it is a “game changer” in the arena of urban transportation. He went on to say that the fleet sales model enables the company to contain costs and serves as an excellent proving ground that leads to further engineering and design improvements and innovation.
Once in operation, the car share program will feature a fleet of 10 Maya 300s which will be available online at www.AltCar.org. Participation in the car share program will require a one-time $25 application fee which will include a background check and a $50 annual membership fee in addition to usage fees.
