Fremont, California is a combination of five smaller communities that came together to form a larger city in 1956. The city is named after the great American explorer John Charles Fremont, also known as "the Great Pathfinder." Fremont is located in the Southeast section of the San Francisco Bay Area.
Fremont has been a Tree City USA since 1996, with about 55,000 trees throughout the city. Fremont also has several parks, such as Fremont Central Park with Lake Elizabeth and Fremont Park Golf Course located in it, Coyote Hills Regional Park, Mission Peak Regional Preserve, and Quarry Lakes Regional Recreational Area. The Don Edwards National Wildlife Refuge headquarters and visitor's' center are located in Fremont with entrances into the refuge.
Aqua Adventure water park opened in Fremont in 2009. The Ardenwood Historic Farm is a regional landmark that opened to the public in 1985. The area includes a farm, a forest, and a mansion, built in 1857, named the Patterson House after the farm's original owner George Washington Patterson. The Olive Hyde Art Gallery is operated by the city of Fremont. The Gallery features numerous Bay Area artists and is housed in the former home of a descendant of early San Francisco mayor, George Hyde. The Niles Essanay Silent Film Museum is located at the former site of Essanay Studios, who made films with silent film stars Charlie Chaplin and Broncho Billy. The museum still shows silent films.
There are a few colleges and universities located within Fremont. The main campus of Ohlone Community College is in the city, as well as an extension campus of the University of California, Berkeley and the University of Phoenix Bay Area Campus. Northwestern Polytechnic University and DeVry University also offer select programs in Fremont.
